Avalon's private pick-up service collects you from your door and transfers you to the airport. Travel to Paris where you will be met and transferred to Westin Paris Vendôme, Pullman Paris Montparnasse or Hotel du Collectionneur Arc de Triomphe (or similar) for two nights.

During your included city sightseeing tour of Paris, see the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral, the unique Louvre Museum with its contrasting modern glass pyramid and striking Renaissance architecture, the commemorative Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower, a structural masterpiece of its age. Alternatively you may wish to join a guided walk through historic Ile St Louis and Ile de la Cité. In your free time, perhaps stroll the Champs-Elysées, visit the world-famous Louvre or head to Montmartre to enjoy its gleaming white Sacré Coeur Basilica and bevy of artists on the Place du Tertre. The city is well known for its colourful nightlife and an optional outing to one of Paris' famous cabarets might be available tonight.

Day 3: Paris - Dijon -Beaune - Chalon-sur-Saône - Tournus

Included today: Choice of visit to Hôtel Dieu or Burgundy wine tasting in Beaune

After breakfast board the TGV train to Dijon and from there, drive to Beaune, the unofficial capital of the Côte d'Or area. Although life here centres around wine, Beaune offers much more with its ramparts, medieval houses, cobblestone streets, and historical monuments. Today, choose between an included excursion to Hôtel Dieu charity hospital, the area's most famous historical site which now houses Van der Weyden's painting of the Last Judgement, or an included tasting of Burgundy wines. Later, head south to Chalon-sur-Saône to board your cruise ship. Before dinner, meet your crew at a welcome reception and depart for Tournus.

After breakfast, a local guide introduces the highlights of Tournus, a delightful town tucked away in the southeast corner of Burgundy. Tournus is one of the oldest and most important monastic centres in the region. Be sure to visit the abbey of St Philibert, which dates back to the 10th century and is a superb example of Romanesque architecture. There's free time to stroll through the quaint streets or to explore the arts and crafts shops near the abbey. After lunch a choice of optional excursions is available, including a visit to a wine cellar. Before dinner, there's an on-board cheese tasting.

Lyon is France's third-largest city and its gastronomic capital. Founded by the Romans in 43BC, the city's prosperity dates back to the 16th century and is due to commercial, industrial and banking activities. Today Lyon offers up a wealth of Roman ruins, excellent museums and Renaissance architecture. With a local guide, survey the city from Fourvière Hill and explore the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its maze of medieval alleyways and Place des Terreaux, a popular area with lively cafés, monuments and the famous fountain.

Day 6: Lyon

Enjoy a free day in this fascinating city to explore at leisure. Early risers might like to visit the local produce market. Perhaps wander through one of Lyon's parks, discover some of the murals or choose from a range of optional excursions. Be sure to taste the gastronomic delights and sample the wine of the region: Beaujolais, wine connoisseurs know that the grapes must be hand picked. Your Cruise Director will have plenty of suggestions for things to do.

Day 7: Tournon & Tain l'Hermitage - Viviers

The twin cities of Tournon and Tain l'Hermitage lie nestled among vineyards between the Rhône River and the granite slopes of the Hermitage. A local guide will show you Tournon, one of France's oldest medieval cities, with its imposing 16th century castle and Roman ruins. Cruise to Viviers, arriving late afternoon, where the included guided walk introduces you to this charming town, developed around its Romanesque Cathedral. The Old Town has an appealing mix of Christian, Roman, and medieval influences.

The fortified city of Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse region and one of the most picturesque regions of Provence. Dominated by the grandiose Palace of the Popes, the city is often referred to as the 'City of Popes' and was the centre of the Catholic Church in the 14th century. During the guided tour, you can choose to join an included visit to the Palace of the Popes or you may opt for further city sightseeing and either time at leisure or one of the optional excursions to Pont du Gard or to the wine cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape

In Arles, located on the northern tip of the Camargue and once known as the 'Little Rome of Gaul', a Local Guide will show you highlights of the city including the Roman Amphitheatre. Still used today, it dates to the 1st century and was constructed to hold over 20,000 spectators. Vincent Van Gogh was inspired by the beauty of Provence and spent a very productive year in Arles. This evening sail toward the mouth of the Rhône for a unique opportunity to experience the tranquil vistas of Camargue National Park (daylight permitting).

These 110m (361ft.) ships are sister ships whose modern and imaginative design creates a feeling of space and light, but, carrying a maximum of just 138 passengers, also offer an intimate and relaxing way to enjoy the river cruises. Breakfast, lunch and four-course dinner are all served in an elegant, open-seating dining room surrounded by panorama windows. Or choose to take your al fresco, grilled lunch in the Sky Bistro or a light dinner on all Suite Ships in the charming Panorama Bistro. Avalon Waterways offers all these options, and with all of our cruises, all is included - we never charge extra for alternative dining options.

Are you a lark or a night owl? We will serve you from dawn until well after dusk. At breakfast we cater to early and late risers. Our hearty Breakfast Buffet offers a wide range of cold and cooked options, now including sparkling wine and your eggs cooked to order. If you prefer, you can enjoy a continental breakfast in the privacy of your stateroom.

An excellent selection of salads and hot dishes are served at the Lunch Buffet with a choice of appetizers, delicious soups, homemade breads and tempting desserts. All of which can be enjoyed with complimentary soft drinks.

Save room for traditional afternoon tea served in the lounge, with freshly-brewed coffee or tea and mouth-watering cakes and biscuits.

Dinner is always an exceptional experience. Elegant but informal, it is served in a single sitting with waiter service, crisp white table linen, fine china and silver cutlery. Every evening the chef will delight you with an à la carte four-course gourmet meal that typically features an appetiser, soup, main course, dessert, and coffee or tea. Every dinner menu features a signature regional dish created on board by a local chef using the freshest of ingredients, offering additional insight into the local culinary culture … all paired with perfect regional wines and beers, or soft drinks - all complimentary.

If you are still peckish before bed, we offer a selection of late night treats. Throughout the day, enjoy complimentary tea, Lavazza coffee and fresh fruit juice.

Don't worry if you favour lighter meals as healthier options, low-calorie, low-sodium and glucose-free cuisine are all available.

Join us in the Main Lounge at Cocktail Hour for a glass or two of excellent regional wine, beer or spirits.
