Broad, romantic and majestic, the Danube combines all the characteristics of the world's great rivers; and our unique combination with Salzburg presents a wonderful opportunity to experience great European cities, their art, history and musical heritage. We begin our tour with two nights in Salzburg, where our included excursions take us from Mozart to the Sound of Music.
We then join our aptly-named vessel, MS Mozart, beautifully appointed with extremely spacious cabins, for a cruise through spectacular landscapes such as the beautiful Wachau Valley. Add to this such illuminating ports of call as Melk, with its splendid Benedictine abbey; Budapest, crowned Queen of the Danube; and Vienna, where Mozart composed his greatest operas and symphonies.
Titan's VIP Home Departure Service® transports you from your front door to London Heathrow or Gatwick Airport and your direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Munich. On arrival we transfer to your hotel in Salzburg where we enjoy dinner this evening*. Your 4★ hotel will be the Best Western Imlauer or similar.
After breakfast we take a guided walking tour of old Salzburg, the historic city set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery and overlooked by the fortress Hohensalzburg. Our musical theme begins today as we explore the city of Mozart's birth and his house which is now a museum of his life and works. The cathedral, built between 1614 and 1655, is a fine example of the Baroque style and shows the last features of the Italian Renaissance; whilst the Getreidegasse is a lively shopping street adorned with wrought iron signs. The afternoon is free for further exploration. This evening we experience a three-course meal and Mozart performance at Europe's oldest restaurant, the Stiftskeller St Peter*.
After breakfast, we leave for a tour of the 'Sound of Music' country taking in mountains, meadows, lakes and picturesque villages. We continue to St Gilgen, situated at the end of the Lake of St Wolfgang. We follow the shores of crescent-shaped Lake Mondsee and arrive at the historic town of Mondsee with its Benedictine Abbey. Later this afternoon we arrive in the old German city of Passau and embark our majestic vessel MS Mozart. We sail early evening, and tonight you are welcomed on board with the Captain's dinner.
Krems is in the heart of the beautiful Wachau Valley, and our included excursion this morning travels first to the baroque Stift Goettweig Monastery that overlooks the Danube. We continue to Dürnstein, a pretty town dominated by the ruins of Kuenringer Castle where Richard the Lionheart was reputedly held prisoner. It is best explored on foot, and a stroll through medieval cobblestoned streets reveals old burgher houses, wine taverns and quaint 16th and 18th century townhouses. Enjoy a tasting of local wine before returning to the ship.
