This is a differently curated trip to a standard river cruise, and it’s worth knowing that up front. The first six nights are spent on land, travelling by small-group coach through the Italian Lakes, Verona and the Dolomites with a Luxury Gold Travel Concierge. The second week is on the water: seven nights aboard Uniworld’s S.S. La Venezia, the only luxury river ship that sails the Venetian Lagoon.
The land week is where a lot of the character comes from. You’ll see Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella before it opens to the public, have lunch at Il Desco — Verona’s Michelin-starred restaurant, set in a Renaissance palazzo — and take a cable car up into the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way back down to the coast there’s a prosecco tasting in Valdobbiadene, the hills where the wine comes from, before you join the ship in Venice.
Once on board, the pace slows. There’s an early-morning visit to the Doge’s Palace before the day crowds arrive, a private after-hours visit to St Mark’s Basilica as the gold mosaics are lit, and time on the quieter lagoon islands — Burano, Mazzorbo and Torcello — plus Chioggia, the fishing town at the lagoon’s southern end.
It suits someone who wants Northern Italy done properly in one trip, with the logistics taken care of. If a week on the lagoon is enough on its own, the 8-day cruise-only version, Venice & the Jewels of Veneto, is worth a look too — we’re happy to talk you through which fits.
Arrive in Milan and transfer to the Gran Hotel Rosa Grand, a few minutes’ walk from the Duomo and well placed for exploring Milan’s central piazzas and landmarks.. This evening you’ll meet your fellow travellers over a welcome dinner of Milanese dishes.
Day 2 - Milan, Lake Como, Stresa
A guided morning in Milan takes in the Duomo, the glass-roofed Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Teatro alla Scala. Then it’s north to Lake Como for free time by the water, before continuing to Stresa on the shore of Lake Maggiore for two nights.
Day 3 - Stresa, Lake Maggiore
Cross Lake Maggiore to Isola Bella for a visit to Palazzo Borromeo before it opens to the public — the Baroque state rooms first, then an aperitif in the terraced gardens looking out over the lake. Afterwards, visit Isola dei Pescatori, the small fishing island next door, and have a relaxed lunch.
Day 4 - Verona
Travel east to Verona for lunch at Il Desco, the city’s Michelin-starred restaurant, where regional cooking is served in the rooms of a Renaissance palazzo. In the afternoon, explore the Roman Arena and Piazza delle Erbe, the old market square. Tonight you stay at the Due Torri Hotel in the historic centre, a five-star hotel in the heart of Verona’s historic centre, a short walk from the Roman Arena and Juliet’s House.
Day 5 - Bolzano, the Dolomites
Head north into South Tyrol and Bolzano, where Italian and Austrian influences sit side by side. After a guided walk there’s time to visit the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home to Ötzi the Iceman, if you’d like to. Then continue up into the Dolomites and on to Cortina d’Ampezzo for two nights at the Faloria Mountain Spa Resort. An alpine hotel surrounded by the Dolomites, with a spa and mountain views in the centre of Cortina.
Day 6 — The Dolomites
A scenic day in the Dolomites, with a cable car ride up for views across the peaks and a stop for traditional strudel. Your guide will also cover the area’s First World War history — the front line ran through these mountains.
Leave the mountains for the prosecco hills of Valdobbiadene, where you’ll have a tasting and light lunch at a local producer. Then on to Venice to board S.S. La Venezia, your home for the next seven nights.
Day 8 — Venice
With your early morning arrival at Doge’s Palace, you’ll be able to marvel at the estate in total peace. Wander through a Venetian neighborhood and experience daily life in an authentic Venetian residential quarter.
Later in the evening, cap the day off with a private once-in-a-lifetime experience at an after-hours lighting ceremony inside St. Mark’s Basilica without the crowds.

In the evening, you may wish to take your free time to stroll into town to appreciate this charming island when most of the tourists have left for the evening. Burano’s brightly painted fishermen’s cottages are an artist’s dream —hot pink, chartreuse, orange, lemon yellow, and more.

The River Countess underwent a complete design renovation in 2020, debuting as the S.S. La Venezia to bring guests an enhanced luxury experience inspired by Northern Italy. The redesign of the S.S. La Venezia drew influence from the fine Fortuny fabrics displayed prominently onboard. Murano glass, gilded accents and artistic etched elements pay homage to popular Venetian aesthetics of the early 20th century, creating an onboard atmosphere that is at once elegant and nostalgic.
