Inspiring composers throughout the centuries, the Danube is central to the story of Europe.

The longest river in the European Union, it is the second-longest river in Europe after Russia’s Volga. Beginning in the Black Forest region of Germany and flowing through 10 countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine) on its way to the Black Sea. Much older than the Rhine, its basin is thought to have been the site of some of the earliest human cultures, and it remains one of Europe’s most important and historic waterways and a popular river cruise destination.

Budapest
The “Queen of the Danube,” in part because of the way the city hugs the banks of the river, Budapest is an enchanting city that vibrantly mixes East and West, medieval and modern. Made up of two parts—Buda (the hills) and Pest (the flatlands)—and divided by the Danube, and the Chain Bridge linking Buda and Pest. Budapest is Eastern Europe’s liveliest and most cosmopolitan city.

Vienna
The other side of the Wachau valley lies the home of such famous composers as Strauss, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Hayden. Music is very much the life blood of the Austrian capital. Another tradition to savour is a stop at one of Vienna’s Kaffeehaus’ for a slice of sachertorte chocolate cake and a smooth local coffee.
