Cambodia

Once home to the Khmer Empire a kingdom that flourished from the 9th to the 13th centuries and whose capital city of Angkor is thought to have been the largest pre-industrial urban center in the world. The remnants of the Khmer Empire continue to provide Cambodia with an invaluable tourist destination.

Cambodia has become one of the world’s preeminent destinations for travel, and river cruising has made it that much more accessible. The scenery makes the trip worthwhile, explore ancient Angkor ruins and temples, see the graceful French architecture of Phnom Penh or just enjoy the beauty of the mystical Mekong River itself.

Angkor

Located just outside the town on Siem Reap Angkor is one of Asia’s greatest ancient sites and renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, gaze in awe at the magnificent city and temples of Angkor. Angkor Thom a fortified 13th-century city with five monumental gates and 91-metre wide moat; its centre contains one of Angkor’s most astonishing sites, the temple of Bayon. Crowned by over 50 towers, each with four colossal carved heads looking out in every direction, this is an extraordinary masterpiece of Khmer art. A smaller temple of Ta Prohm which has been left in its natural, unrestored state, with giant tropical trees bursting through the ruins, their roots entwined like vast tentacles across the moss-covered, weathered walls and roofs.

The immense temple of Angkor Wat, one of the largest religious structures in the world. The main entrance faces west to catch the rose-red glow of the setting sun, a truly magical time of day.

Kampong Chhang
lakeside wetlands that form the mouth of Tonle Sap River. Enjoy the stunning variety of bird life here as well as tranquil floating villages and its busy market

Kampong Tralach
In Kampong Tralach, you’ll have a truly authentic excursion – an oxcart ride through a local village along the river bank.

Koh Chen
Koh Chen and visit home workshops specializing in silver- and copper-smithing. You’ll get an up-close view of how local artisans make ornamental items often used in traditional ceremonies.

Oudong
Oudong, Cambodia’s former royal capital from the early 17th century until 1866. Today, Oudong is a place of pilgrimage for Cambodians. Nestling at the foot of Phnom Udong, a wooded hill with impressive Buddhist spiritual monuments towering above the trees, marking the final resting place of the Khmer kings.

PhnomPenh
Cambodia’s infamous Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge’s grim Tuol Sleng S21 detention center (Genocide Museum) just outside the city. s pectacular Silver Pagoda and the National Museum, which has an outstanding collection of Khmer crafts.

Called the ‘Paris of the East’ during colonial times, Phnom Penh has preserved much of its wonderful rustic charm, elegance and French allure. Sightseeing includes an exciting cyclerickshaw ride to the dazzling Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, followed by a chance to witness exceptionally beautiful Khmer craft in the National Museum.

Tan Chau
Enjoy a visit to Tan Chau, a small Mekong River town unspoiled by tourism. You will have the opportunity to take a traditional “xe-loi” (trishaw) ride around the town, with stops at silk-making and rattan mat workshops, followed by a boat ride through the narrow channels of the Mekong River to “Evergreen Island.”
