Day 2 - Kalocsa
Enjoy cruising to the Baroque provincial town of Kalocsa, which lies at the periphery of the Great Hungarian plain and is renowned for its decorative embroidery and paprika production. Today you’ll get to attend a traditional Hungarian Puszta horse show
Day 3 - Osijek
You’ll enjoy options galore during your time in the Croatian city of Osijek. The region itself is modestly sized, picturesquely positioned on the river Drava. Although the city was bombed in the wars that followed the break up of the old Yugoslavia in 1991, much of its Baroque heart survived, in tact.
Explore Osijek on a guided city tour, or if you’re the more active type, you could opt to take a blissful guided bike ride through Osijek’s countryside.
As a special Scenic guest, you’ll be invited into the home of a local family for a traditional home-cooked meal and the chance to discover what everyday life is really like in Croatia. With great food and wonderful company, this will be both a magnificent meal and a rare opportunity to meet with people who understand the local way of life intimately.
Day 4 - Belgrade
The Sava and Danube rivers meet in the city of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Communist blocks rub shoulders with Art Nouveau masterpieces, and you’re invited to explore this intriguing region of stark contrasts, to see how Belgrade is heading towards a brighter future. Join your local guide and discover one of the oldest capital cities in Europe, Belgrade. Alternatively, choose a guided bicycle ride along the Danube, or taste your way around the local market through our Shop with a Chef offering. Or for some true insight into local life join a walking tour with a local. Raise a toast to the end of a wonderful day, it’s a moment to savour and a chance to reflect on all you’ve seen and experienced.
Day 5 - Iron Gates
Relax on board and admire the scenery as you cruise the spectacular Iron Gates – a narrow gorge that the Danube has carved out between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains. Not only is it a spectacular setting for a cruise, it’s also the natural border between Serbia and Romania.
Day 6 - Svishtov & Rousse
As you continue your journey further east, another day full of wonderful choices presents itself Journey from Svishtov to the Byzantine gem of Veliko Tarnovo, a town with a rich historical past. You’ll venture to the nearby leafy village or Arbanassi, which features on the World Heritage cultural list. Alternatively stay on board and enjoy the trip towards the Bulgarian town of Rousse, where you’ll be treated to a guided sightseeing tour. Its the fifth biggest city in Bulgaria and home to a grand square enlivened by cafes and Austro-Hungarian influenced architecture. The city’s past is abundantly displayed in several museums, and it’s ruined Roman fortress, which overlooks the Danube.
Day 7 - Silidtra
Silistra is a port city located on the southern bank of the lower Danube. During your visit, you may be surprised at the abundance of historical landmarks found here. Discover the Silistra Fort during an active walking tour, or take an excursion to Varna on the Black Sea coast. Or, tour a local village, including a visit to the primary school, and learn about life in Bulgaria.
Day 8 Giurgiu & Bucharest
This morning you will disembark your cruise ship and travel to the Romanian capital of Bucharest. The city displays a perplexing mismatch of eras, grey housing blocks form the Ceausescu’s brutal rebuilding phase, French influenced palaces with Baroque clam shaped canopies, the ruins of medieval churches and courts, sand 21st century office buildings. even a short walk is a revealing history lesson. Afterwards, check-in for your overnight stay in Bucharest. Enjoy a guided visit to the impressive Palace of the Parliament, the second largest administrative building in the world. Or tour the Village Open Air Museum and discover ethnography exhibits depicting Romanian heritage and culture.
Day 9 - Bucharest Return Home
After breakfast, prepare to head home. It may be the end of your journey, but it’s the beginning of a lifetime of fond memories.
