Austria

In order to visit Austria you would be taking a Danube river cruise.  The highlights of your Danube river cruise could include the following destinations within Austria.

Melk

Melk is home to the wonderous melk abbey, an ivory and gold Baroque imperial fortress which was built between 1702-1739 by architect Jakob Prandtauer . Today it is a Benedictine monastery and the black robed monks can be seen walking around the site which also houses a school, a museum and an 80,000 manuscript library.

Wachau Valley

Austria’s Wachau valley is a 24 mile stretch of countryside which has been designated a UNESCO site. It is a stunning place to cruise through due to its castle ruins, walnut trees and apricot orchards. Between Melk and Krems one can find a wine region which has vineyards dating back to the 9th century.

Vienna

The other side of the Wachau valley lies the home of such famous composers as Strauss, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Hayden. Music is very much the life blood of the Austrian capital. Another tradition to savour is a stop at one of Vienna’s Kaffeehaus’ for a slice of sachertorte chocolate cake and a smooth local coffee.

Saltzburg

The incredibly pretty town of Salzburg has been recognised by UNESCO for its well preserved medieval town core and musical heritage, its most famous son of course being Mozart. A walking tour is the best way to see the sites of Salzburg via its narrow cobbled streets and colourful gardens. A tour will be sure to take in the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the town’s most eye catching landmark.

Linz

Sitting by the banks of the Danube, Linz is Austria’s third largest city and is home to a thriving arts and music scene.  World renowned art of the 19thand 20th centuries can be found in the Lentos museum of art.  You can also enjoy world-class music and drama in the Brucknerhaus and the Landestheater.  Take a wander through the cobbled streets of the old town and the main square which is one of the largest in Europe.
